Its first services were simple personal loans and mortgages. Before long, it began expanding its services to include basic savings account, financial planning, and eventually term deposits and investments.
Westpac Bank grew impressively through a series of acquisitions in the mid-90s. In 1995 it combined with Challenge Bank, a company in Western Australia, in 1996 with the Trust Bank in New Zealand, and in 1997 with the Bank of Melbourne in Victoria.
Today, Westpac has around 330,000 shareholders and 28,000 employees around the world, most of them in Australia and New Zealand. As of September 2007, its net profits were over $3.4 billion after taxes. It is now one of the top 10 companies by market capitalization as listed by the Australian Securities Exchange Limited.
